A Better Way

A poem on writer’s block

Is it a joy
That stagnation employs?

Ripping out the inspiration
With a series of words
You can’t seem to remember

There was a point
That I was trying to make
Hidden deep in that corner of pain
I’ve only recently awoken from

Do you mean to tell me
This view so heavenly
Only exists externally?

That, to explore this divinity
I must do so plainly
With no artistic integrity

For the tools that began this journey
Are now chained up internally?

There must be another way
To face the road ahead
Having grown in excess
Having strengthened the resolve

There must be another way
To carry on with lyrical expression
Without reverting back to old ways
Without dipping a toe back in

You say the art comes out of pain
That joy muddles artistic panels of the brain
But there must be another way
It’s not true, what you say

The sorrow and the pain
Inspirational as they may be
Only ever sing the same refrain
Emotion’s unapologetic guarantee

It will return
You will see
Only then will it be clear

That therapizing yourself
Through the words on a page
Can only diminish your health
And drive you insane

There is another way
To look through the glass of pain
To identify the darker days
And move in healthier ways

Much like your pain
Your inspiration can’t always be the same

So, tell me

If there isn’t a better way
Then why haven’t we all gone insane?
